Genetic monogamy in two long-lived New Zealand passerines

چکیده
High rates of extra-pair paternity (EPP) can be relatively common in passerines whereas low rates or absence of EPP are often associated with taxa that are long-lived and exhibit obligatory paternal care. We examined EPP in an underrepresented category: passerine species with relatively long life spans (or low annual mortality rates). Specifically, we studied EPP in New Zealand saddlebacks Philesturnus carunculatus and robins Petroica australis, two species with unusually low annual mortality rates (6.5 11% and 10 20% respectively). No EPP (0%) was detected in saddlebacks (39 pairs, 202 offspring) and only one case of EPP (1.9%) was detected in robins (54 pairs, 198 offspring). Genetic monogamy in these passerine species supports the hypothesis that low annual mortality rates play an important role in explaining variation in rates of EPP across species.

Monogamy on the fast track.
Social monogamy has evolved multiple times and is particularly common in birds. It is not well understood why some of these species are continuously and permanently paired while others occasionally 'divorce' (switch partners). Although several hypotheses have been considered, experimental tests are uncommon. Estrildid finches are thought to be permanently paired because being short-lived opport...
متن کاملNew Zealand Passerines Help Clarify the Diversification of Major Songbird Lineages during the Oligocene
Passerines are the largest avian order, and the 6,000 species comprise more than half of all extant bird species. This successful radiation probably had its origin in the Australasian region, but dating this origin has been difficult due to a scarce fossil record and poor biogeographic assumptions. Many of New Zealand's endemic passerines fall within the deeper branches of the passerine radiati...
متن کاملHistoric and contemporary levels of genetic variation in two New Zealand passerines with different histories of decline.
We compared historic and contemporary genetic variation in two threatened New Zealand birds (saddlebacks and robins) with disparate bottleneck histories. Saddlebacks showed massive loss of genetic variation when extirpated from the mainland, but no significant loss of variation following a severe bottleneck in the 1960s when the last population was reduced from approximately 1000 to 36 birds. L...
متن کاملA Gondwanan origin of passerine birds supported by DNA sequences of the endemic New Zealand wrens.
Zoogeographic, palaeontological and biochemical data support a Southern Hemisphere origin for passerine birds, while accumulating molecular data suggest that most extant avian orders originated in the mid-Late Cretaceous. We obtained DNA sequence data from the nuclear c-myc and RAG-1 genes of the major passerine groups and here we demonstrate that the endemic New Zealand wrens (Acanthisittidae)...
متن کاملSystematic affinities of two enigmatic New Zealand passerines of high conservation priority, the hihi or stitchbird Notiomystis cincta and the kokako Callaeas cinerea.
Traditional systematic relations within the Passeriformes, perching birds, have recently been re-shuZed in a major review of the “largest avian radiation” (Barker et al., 2004). This includes now recognising Wve basal oscine passerine lineages, rather than the traditional view of two major groups, the Passerida and Corvida (Sibley and Ahlquist, 1990). The avian fauna of New Zealand provide key ...
